Japan `09: Day Six

by admin — Categories: UncategorizedLeave a comment

Visited Oba-chan (Rika`s Grandmother, or actually, her grave) in the morning.

We had a Japanese soba lunch in Kannai area since we were going to visit Yokohama City Hall.

Cosmo World in Minato Mirai.
The last 8 pictures were taken from the giant ferris wheel, which until the one in London was built, was the tallest in the world.  The one in London is a mere 1 foot taller.  But after that, the taller one (than London) has been built in Tokyo Odaiba, and now it’s the tallest in the world. LOL. The battle continues…

Dinner at the Pier
The first pic is inside the old port warehouse “Akarenga“, which is 150 years old, and was converted into shopping and dining.  The 12th pic is of the outside.
The sand you see was brought in from Australia for the summer festival.
I had a Hawaiian burger and Rika had a Japanese “Omuraisu” (rice omelet) – both very delicious!
Finally, the sunset over the pier area.

Videos from Japan removed (temporarily)

by admin — Categories: Uncategorized1 Comment

YouTube seems to be fairly inconsistent when it comes to their support of the AVCHD video format. It WAS working, but all the videos we uploaded (over 30) came out messed up. So, I`m removing them for now, and will encode them into flash video when I get back to the states (no computers powerful enough here). Sorry, but you`ll have wait. :-/

OK, I’m slowly putting videos up.  YouTube hasn’t fixed the issue yet, so i’m using MotionBox.  They don’t allow HD content unless you pay for the premium service, so you’ll only see “decent” quality videos for now.  When YouTube fixes their issues I’ll swap the videos out to bring you HD content.

Japan ’09:Day Five

2nd visit to Ramen Museum - Shin (new) Yokohama with Amelie. This time, as it’s advertised, we got in for free because we wore Yukata. Since we can only eat the ramen from 2 shops (they won’t let you share one ramen instead you can order the half size) we needed to pick raman shops carefully. Our choice was kind of poor this time. Oh well.

We went to Inase sushi with Jiji and Baba.

Japan ’09: Day Four

Semi“!  Typical kinds that you normally hear around my house are “Tsuku Tsuku Boshi (by clicking you can hear their sound)” and ”Higurashi.” However, if you are in Japan in summer, you’ll hear this really loud “Min Min Zemi” orchestra almost everywhere you go as long as there are trees. Also in this video, you hear the black crows. This is what we heard almost everyday while we were in Japan. The black crows in Japan is slightly bigger than ones in the US and they are very talkative. When Amelie and mama were taking a bath, we heard the voice outside of the window and we totally thought that is a human voice but it was actually the black crow talking. LOL

Yokohama Akarenga and Osanbashi with Jiji and Baba.

After we walked and walked to find the restaurant that is open on Monday, we finally found this place and ate some Yakitori. Amelie, of course, had a Natto. :-) We also stopped by this donuts store “Hara Donuts” where they serve donuts made from Tofu and tried some of those.

Japan ’09: Day Three

We started the day with a haircut at “Rudy de grazios” in Motomachi. Mine is pretty good, just what I asked for, but nothing really new. Rika, on the other hand, spent 4 times as much and got a “Digital Perm”, which is a technology developed recently in Japan and not released elsewhere yet. Like a perm, it makes your hair wavy, or curly. It has a lot more precise control over how it looks, and has the opposite reaction to water. A standard perm gets more curly when wet and straightens out when dry. A digital perm is straight when when and curls when dry. That’s more like natural curls, isn’t it?

After a couple of hours at the salon (some of which I went out for a walk, and did a video conference with my brother), we went to a “Shichishi Ramen” ramen shop that was recommended by the guys at the salon.  O.E.Sheeee!  So yummy!  I had Tan Tan Men and she had Shio Ramen. But first as we exited the salon, I recorded this clip of a group of people taking part in the bon festival’s traditions in the street outside the salon. (Rika will fill in details/explination soon)

Amelie’s Day: Amelie stayed with Jiji and Baba while we are at the hair salon and had some fun with them.

That evening we went to the Bon Dance, which ultimately got rained out.  Still, Amelie played a “Kingyo Sukui” game where you try to scoop out a goldfish with a net made of rice paper.  Obviously time is of the essance.  She wasn’t able to do it after two tries, mostly because she was scared to actually catch the fish, but they gave her a goldfish anyway.  She was SO happy!  She loves her new pet!

Japan ’09: Day Two

by admin — Categories: Vacations1 Comment

We were too worn out to post last night, but I’m up early, due to having forgotten to put the HDCam’s battery on the charger last night, and doing the business.

We were off to a slow start in the morning, but then headed off to Isezaki-cho (since there is UniQlo) to buy Yukatas for Rika and Amelie, and a Jinbei for me… to wear at the fireworks festival at night (video below).
Sound of the Semi:

After Jiji and Baba went home, 3 of us went to Motomachi to just to browse around. We checked out Union, which is supposed to be an American style grocery store.  Don’t believe it.  It is laid out like one, but the contents, not so much.  They did have a very nice wine selection (for a grocery store), complete with a walk-in cellar for the nicer stuff.  And they had nice stuff.  We couldn’t resist buying a Margeaux at a very good price.

Motomachi was fun… we took a picture in a BIG red chair in front of Daniel Furniture Store and were able to drink beer walking down the street… legal in Japan!

When we got back Amelie had a chance to wear out her JiJi (grandfather) – she loves to use him like a toy doll.

The fireworks at Minato Mirai were great, although we missed some because we were late.  Plus, we didn’t get to record as much as we’d have liked because our HDCam’s battery died.  Oh well, here’s the day’s images:
